More Germany

May 4, 2007  Lake Konigsee/Munich

The two mornings in Salzburg were rough.  Literally.  The B&B we stayed at had THE roughest towels I have ever experienced.  When I first used one, I thought Francesca, the owner, had made a mistake and left the rags in the room.  They seriously took at least two layers of skin off  after every shower.  I suppose a little defoliating never hurts anyone.

We took off for the Untersberg.  There is a cable car that brought us near the top and then we hiked a bit farther to the summit.  It took about an hour.  The views of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains were gorgeous.

We stopped at the warming hut for a cappucino--well, two of us had cappucinos.

We were hoping to see Eagle's Nest, but alas, it wasn't opening for the season until the next day.  (A good reason to go back.)  We headed into Berchtesgaden and caught a boat to the Church of St. Bartholomew on Lake Konigsee.

The boat was filled with Germans chuckling at the captain's commentary (of course, we couldn't understand a word).  The scenery was beautiful.  Midway through the trip, they stopped the boat and the first mate pulled out a trumpet to demonstrate the echo off the surrounding cliffs.  We arrived at the church about 30 minutes later and explored the area.

Had we had more time, we I would have liked to hike some of the trails around the lake.  Instead, we headed to the beer garden for lunch.

There was a woman on the boat who obviously loved denim.  Katie called it a "Joutfit" (a jean outfit).
Even her visor was denim.
We could see Hitler's Eagle's Nest from the boat.  It was a gift for his 50th birthday.  Apparently, he only made 14 visits to the chalet.

 Eagle's Nest

After the cruise, we headed to Munich.  I was so thankful for Gerta (our name for the GPS).  She led us right to our hotel.  After we checked in, we walked to a wonderful Italian restaurant called LaVecchia Masseria.  I definitely recommend it.  Another day was done.  This trip was going way too fast.
Is anyone else sick of my green fleece?
